Celebrating Freedom 2014
The Lake Cumberland Blue Star Mother’s hosted the seventh annual Celebrating Freedom event with the theme of “THANK A VET” at Somerset Mall on November 8, 2014. Almost 100 Veterans attended the celebration.
The Southern Elementary youth Choir perform the National Anthem and performed a variety of patriotic songs under the direction of Dawn Upchurch including, “Thank a Vet.” The SWHS-JROTC presented the Colors and the Service Flags under the direction of CW4 Voirs and 1SG Long. The PCHS-JROTC under the direction of SFC Andrews and Maj. Foncannon, performed a special duet performance and a solo performance featuring twirling rifles and several passes of the rifles that entertained everyone with their timing.
Many thanks to these young people.
All the Veterans and their guest were treated to a special lunch catered by Bill Hamilton of Main Street Deli.
A generous donation given by GE local Union IUE-CWA 83767 covered the cost of the meal and the gift bags that were given to the Veterans.
We were able to honor Veteran’s from WWII through War on Terrorism.
We were so honored to be in the presence of these wonderful Veterans who have given their time in the military service to help provide our freedom.
Ms. Betty Brock of Hardee’s South donated a certificate for a free meal for each of the Veterans.
This has been an annual donation from Ms. Brock since the Celebrating Freedom stared in 2008.
The LCBSM engages in numerous fundraising efforts throughout the year to cover the incidental cost association with the Celebrating Freedom event as well as other programs such as the Yellow Ribbon Project. It is a special privilege for us to honor all our Veterans and active military members. We want to thank the Somerset Mall for their generous assistance in planning the event.
We thank the City of Somerset and the Somerset Fire Dept. for supplying tables and chairs.
Thanks to Debbie Peppers for being our photographer and a big thanks for all the help of our members.
